e-mail: this story With a new Parliament in place, Haiti’s newest Prime Minister Rene Preval has a daunting task of trying to guide his nation, with international donor assistance, towards economic and domestic stability. He has promised to reconcile the many divisions across Haiti and to unite his people across the political spectrum.
Preval was formerly Haiti's president from 1996 to 2001. He’s aiming to achieve a specific milestone which has never yet been achieved in Haitian political history, and that is, to finish it’s 4-year term in office. A point outlined by one government official who commented: ''That's the first challenge, to last the four years without a coup d'etat, without the president saying you're not going to finish your term. 'The population is counting on us. We need to deliver and we need to deliver quickly''.
Timeliness is an issue here, one already identified by the United Nations Security Council who commented that Haiti needs to "ensure a secure and stable environment, strengthen its democratic institutions ... and protect human rights and the rule of law".
Lawlessness is still a major concern, where before Preval’s swearing-in ceremony, a riot broke out at a major prison. Gunshots were heard coming from the prison compound and prisoners were observed on the prison roof waving banners.
Gangs loyal to former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide still rule the streets of Port-au-Prince.
