Many Caribbean nations have actively considered the concept of decriminalizing marijuana. Add the country of Bermuda to this growing list.

Bermuda, being a former British colony, is contemplating the notion of not sending people caught with small amounts of marijuana to prison, according to Bermuda’s Drugs Control Minister Wayne Perinchief.

Perinchief commented: "It's a blight that will never go away. The punitive effect of a marijuana conviction outweighs the crime". Young offenders charged with small amounts of marijuana risk being prevented from working and studying in the United States because of the charges.

Bermuda is mirroring the United Kingdom’s 2004 legislation that downgraded marijuana to that of a lower class of illegal drug. People in possession of small amounts of marijuana won’t be arrested, but can be sent to jail for supplying and distributing it to others.

This plan has drawn criticism from Bermuda’s Opposition Party, the United Bermuda Party, who believes that the concept sends the wrong message and encourages its use.
