The recent Dominican election won by incumbent prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit Labour Party, with an overbearing Chinese influence, has left the country sharply divided, with many very skeptical of what the future holds.

Skerrit’s Labour Party won 11 of 21 seats, while the opposition United Workers Party led by Edison James won 9 in Thursday’s general election.

A jubilant Skerrit said: “The past six weeks have understandably divided us. As leader of the Dominica Labour Party, I hold no bitterness, malice or anger towards anyone. I understand why people said the things they said. That is all part of the process, but the time for healing must begin”.

The Dominica Labour Party campaigned on a platform of economic growth from the International Monetary Fund which in turn increased taxes and job cuts.

On the other hand, the defeated United Workers Party might be looking at new leadership after its second consecutive electoral defeat. Edison James commented: “Losing two elections, there is the need for review, there is a need to look at changes, and there is a need to retool”.

Many have asked what influence Chinese funding and politics had in the outcome? There have been claims of voter harassment, voters being turned away and collusion.

Many Dominicans have seen their freedoms and basic rights slowly evaporate while the Chinese influence and presence become more dominant and aggressive.

Dominicans at home and abroad will have to wait and see what happens next, but under a communist dictatorship, any outburst against the ruling government policies are quickly suppressed and violators are quickly dealt with.

Many Dominicans feel that Skerrit has been manipulated by significant Chinese funding for domestic project and issues since that was quite evident in this election.
