Dominica's new Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit was sworn in as the new prime minister yesterday, 2 days after former leader Pierre Charles died of a heart attack.

Roosevelt Skerrit, 31, was newly chosen by the Dominica Labor Party, the country's ruling political party, to replace Charles, and was sworn in at a ceremony in President Nicholas Liverpool's office.

After Skerrit was sworn in, he said: "The leadership that I will provide to Dominica is one of inclusion…………..The country requires unity, cooperation and understanding of everyone." Skerrit urged his fellow Dominicans to: "rally behind the government of Dominica to ensure that our children have a bright future. I can assure the young people of Dominica that they will have the support at the highest level."

Skerrit attained dual bachelor's degrees in English from the University of Mississippi, and a bachelor's in psychology from New Mexico State University. He began his professional career as a high school teacher, then as a lecturer at Dominica Community College before beginning a political career in 1999.

His entry into the political forum was in education, sports and as a youth affairs minister when he was first elected to the House of Assembly in 2000. He takes over one of the Caribbean’s poorest countries with 71,000 people; plus a government that’s trying to resolve their economic issues while its dependant agriculture and tourism sectors are in need of financial stimulation.

One of Pierre Charles’s downfall was his plan to stimulate the economy by cutting spending and introducing new taxes; unpopular decisions with many workers that led to strikes.

A state funeral is scheduled for 17th January in the southern village of Grand Bay, where he was born.
