More Haitian lives was lost yesterday when 17-year-old Josna Pierre was killed and 2 police officers were wounded in gunfire in Gonaives. The gunfire began when followers of the late Amiot Metayer, a murdered gang leader tried to storm police headquarters. Police reinforcements were sent to Gonaives to secure the station.

Gonaives has been the scene of many violent demonstrations since the murder of Amiot Metayer last month. Amiot’s brother, Butter Metayer, say his murder was ordered by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who have denied the charge.

Before Metayer's death, he was recognized as the leader of “The Cannibal Army” who often defended Aristide by issuing threats, using tough tactics against government opponents. The group has since turned against Aristide after Metayer’s murder.

Last week, Butter Metayer and company told local radio stations that the Cannibal Army was being renamed to “The Front for Aristide's Departure”, whose plans are to capture government officials in Gonaives, holding them hostage until Aristide resigns.
