After last week’s narrow margin of victory in the general election, Bermuda's incumbent premier Jennifer Smith resigned today.

Jennifer Smith resigned as leader of the Progressive Labor Party but will remain a member of Parliament. She cited the narrow electoral victory last week and "friendly fire" from within her party. Smith said: "It was the stated aim of the opposition to put an end to the Smith government…….It is more unfortunate that friendly fire has taken out the Smith government."

Alex Scott is a former public relations manager, and is expected to head the Progressive Labor Party and become its next premier.

Jennifer Smith’s rise to political power began in 1998 on a platform of getting a better deal for blacks, who are the island's majority race but they are poorer than its white citizens.

Last Thursday Smith kept her parliament seat by a slim 8 votes. The Progressive Labor Party won a second term with 22 of 36 legislative seats in the elections, winning 51.65% of the vote. The following day 5 Cabinet members withdrew their support for Smith along with over half of the parliamentary block.
