Belizeans recently went to the election polls last week and chose Prime Minister Said Musa, reelecting an incumbent leader to another 5 year term for the first time since its independence from Great Britain since 1981.

Musa was entangled in an education scandal that appeared to have no bearing on voter’s opinions, who gave Musa's People's United Party 21 of the 29 seats in the National Assembly. He beat fellow lawyer Dean Barrow from the United Democratic Party, who was vying to create history by becoming Belize's first black leader.

A victorious Musa said: "The people are very pleased with the performance of the government and that's why they have voted us back in power". Musa’s ruling People's United Party created a respectable 6.7% average economic growth for Belize compared to 2002, reducing unemployment from 14% to 9%.

Part of Musa’s success can be attributed to the funding of social sectors, building houses and schools, and setting up insurance programmes that gave equal health care for the poor.

Belize , consists of several ethnic groups like Afro-Caribbeans, Asians, Mayan Indians, mixed-blood Mestizos, and Mennonites who are of German descent. Belize also has a sizeable Rastafarian community who smoke marijuana openly in certain areas of Belize City.
