Ghetto Youth Is A Definite Flashback
Ghetto Youth – Little John Volcano/VP
If you have never left the Reggae Classics behind, then you are bound to hot-up-de-place with this 1983 classic from Jamaica’s own Little John, who perfected the “Sing-Jay” (Singer/DJ) style……memories galore.
Little John McMorris was 9-years old when he exploded on the scene with Sugar Minott’s Youth Promotion Sound, and never looked back. “Ghetto Youth” showcases the production wizardry of famed producer Henry “Junjo” Lawes, utilizing the Roots Radics Band. Pure winners and fillers!
Classics like the extended “Dancehall Style”, “Gonna Make You Mine” “Gal A Mad Over Me”, “Left Me Slim Thing” (built on the “3 Blind Mice” riddim) all stand out lyrically and musically. Little John, even though he never wore dreadlocks always catered to the Rastaman in song. “Long Dread Locks” (built on the “Dennis Brown – Revolution” riddim) proves the point.
When you are dealing with Reggae classics in the original dancehall style, you definitely can’t go wrong here. If you didn’t get this album when it was released back in 1983, you shouldn’t miss it now. Put it in your stereo system and make your friends be pleasantly surprised. Stephen Marley – Mind Control (Universal/Tuff Gong)
This album from Stephen Marley has been long awaited from a few years back, and it is definitely grammy material!!
The album consists of 11-tracks plus a music video of the popular “Traffic Jam”. The title track “Mind Control”, a bluesy R&B influenced draws attention to the downpressor who controls your mind to keep you enslaved. Makes you wanna turn it up!
Stephen connects with the hip-hoppers with Mos Def on “Hey Baby” as they both describe the venture a man has to go through when leaving his woman behind in order to reach and achieve his goal; but one thing remains clear….he’s coming back to his woman. Mos Def’s rides the riddim in an infectious slammin style to solidify the effectiveness of the song. “Lonely Avenue” describes Stephen’s desire to be with his woman, while “Fed Up” describes a woman’s frustration to her man’s lack of commitment and respect in their relationship.
Stephen re-connects with his Roots-Rastaman heritage on “Chase Dem” which blazes the Rastaman chant to “Chase the politicians, when I see them I get cold”. “Inna Di Red” showcases a Nyahbinghi beat where Stephen meditates on a ziggy as to the issues facing him, while still being true to his faith.
“Mind Control” does exactly what it says…..control your mind to a higher level where one puts your life in a much clearer perspective……..Grammy material fe true. For More information visit: http://web.stephenmarleymusic.com/index.jsp
